The Committee to Support Journalists, during the monthly report on the state of press freedoms in February 2021, monitored (79) violations against media freedoms and journalists, including (43) Israeli violations, and (26) violations by internal Palestinian bodies. Among (10) cases of violations by social media companies, in the context of fighting Palestinian content and blurring the Palestinian narrative.

Israeli violations

The Israeli attacks in the occupied Palestinian territories, during February / February 2021, were the injury and assault of the occupation forces on (5) journalists, namely: Journalist Mutasim Masarweh, Musab Shawer, and three members of the Palestine TV crew. On the side of the arrests, detentions and summons, the Israeli occupation forces arrested and detained (11) journalists, namely Ali Smudi, Ahmed Jalajil, Mashhur Al-Wahwah, Hamza Al-Hattab, Saif Al-Qawasmi, Muhammad Abu Ramz, Muhammad Karout Adakdik, Muhannad Abu Ghosh, and the Al-Alam news channel crew. Sabreen Abu Diab from the occupied interior, and the researcher in Jerusalem and settlement affairs, Jamal Amr, who deported him from Al-Aqsa Mosque for ten days, to record (1) deportations. To that, the Israeli military courts postponed and extended the arrest of (5) journalists, they are:Tariq Abu Zaid, Tamer al-Barghouti, whose trial was postponed for the fifth time, Yazan Abu Salah, Ahmed Abu Sobeih for the third time, and Muhannad Abu Ghosh, who was later released on condition of imposing a five-day home confinement, to record a case of (1) home confinement and prevented him from Communicating with anyone named in the investigation for a month. The report also recorded (1) a case of raiding and breaking into the home of journalist Muhammad Abu Ramz before his arrest, and tampering with the contents of the house.

The monthly report of the Committee to Support Journalists (2): One case of confiscation, namely the confiscation of the video camera of the journalist, Ahmed Jalajel, and the confiscation of all the equipment of the Al-Alam News Channel staff. Regarding the Israeli occupation’s harassment of imprisoned journalists in the occupation prisons, the committee’s report recorded (2) of violations against the imprisoned journalist Yazan Abu Salah, as the occupation prevents him from meeting his lawyer, and any news about him is prevented, apart from being subjected to physical and psychological torture, and isolation to force him to confess to the charges. The fabrication was made against him, while the occupation prisons administration forced (2) journalists to pay a financial guarantee before releasing them, namely, journalist Ahmed Jalajel, and researcher and lecturer Jamal Abu Amr.Fighting Palestinian content, and social media sites and platforms impose unfair restrictions on Palestinian content, under clear pressure from the Israeli occupation to fight the Palestinian narrative, as the Report of the Journalists Support Committee recorded during the February 2021 report more than (10) cases of bans, closures, deletes and deletions of publications for journalists and media professionals, under the pretext of non-compliance. According to the standards of publishing on social media, news sites have also been confused by publishing false and misleading news.

Palestinian internal violations

In terms of internal Palestinian violations, the report of the Committee to Support Journalists recorded more than (26) violations during the month of February 2021, representing (24) violations in the West Bank, the closure of the Al-Najah satellite channel and the Al-Najah Media Center, and the arbitrary dismissal of 17 journalists and employees, including six From the Gaza Strip, Ajyal Radio completed the work of a number of journalists, including 4 reporters, under the pretext of financial crises. The director of “Bethlehem 2000” radio, journalist George Qanawati, was exposed to insulting and threatening him with beating inside the radio headquarters in the city of Bethlehem by the director of Beit Sahour municipality . In the Gaza Strip, the Khan Yunis court sentenced journalist Ihab Fasfous to six months in prison, with a suspended sentence, and a fine or an effective two-month imprisonment, on charges of “misusing the Internet.”
